Students may apply to the Major In the fall or spring of their sophomore year. Submit a completed S&TS application for admission, which includes the following: (1) a tentative course plan; (2) statement of purpose; (3) current transcript. Devising a course plan Upon application to the Major, students design a program individually tailored to their particular interests. I. Prerequisites: Completion of on S&TS course. First-year Writing Seminars may count as the prerequisites, but not as part of the major. There are no other prerequisites, but students should plan to fulfill the science (PBS) and quantitative (MQR) requirements of the College of Arts & Sciences early in their college careers in order to be in a position to take additional science or engineering courses as outlined below. II. Core course: STS 2011, What is Science? An Introduction to the Social Studies of Science & Technology III. Three additional 2000 level courses selected from the following list: STS 2121, 2051, 2061, 2331, 2501, 2811, 2821, 2851, 2861, 2871, 2921 IV. Additional S&TS courses to total 34 credit hours in the major: Four of these courses must be 3000 level or above, and a minimum of two of these must be 4000 level or higher. STS 1101 and/or 1102 may be used to meet major requirements only if taken as a prerequisite before joining the major or during your first two semesters in the major. V. Additional science courses: Majors must also take 2 science courses in addition to the science requirement of the College of Arts and Sciences. Titles and further details of these courses may be found in the course listing available in 306 Rockefeller Hall. NOTE: All courses chosen to fulfill Major requirements must be taken for a letter grade, and must be a C- or above. The Statement of Purpose Accompanying the application should be a one-page statement explaining your intellectual interests in the S&TS major and why the major is consistent with your academic and career goals. Your statement should outline the rationale for your tentative course plan. The Transcript and College Major Form Your application should also include a transcript of work taken at Cornell University or elsewhere, current as of the date of application. Your application must also be accompanied by the College Advisor/Major form, which may be obtained in 306 Rockefeller Hall.
