Emerging Technologies With support from the National Science Foundation, the Department
of Science & Technology Studies is developing a new focus area
within the existing Ph.D. program to train graduate students in how to study
the social aspects of emerging technologies. Given the rapid pace of technological
change--in such areas as biotechnology and the new genetics,
information technology and computing, and nanotechnology and materials,
demand is increasing for a cadre of social scientists and humanities scholars
specializing in the study of the social dimensions of emerging technology.
Students will gain experience in conducting research in the fast-paced
and speculative world of emerging technologies, and new graduate courses
are being developed on such topics as "Studying emerging technologies"
and "Archiving contemporary science." |
